For this episode, I'm joined by my good friend Ben Hauser for something very different.
Most of you unfamiliar with the new My Little Pony series, are probably very confused right now. After all how could a children’s cartoon, especially a cartoon aimed at little girls be worthy of analytical thought and discussion. Such assumptions are exactly what series creator Lauren Faust set out challenge when she was chosen to helm Hasbro’s re-launch of their classic My Little Pony brand. A fan of the original series when she was young, Faust wanted to change the widely held assumption that media made for little girls was inherently vapid and of low quality. Thus in 2011, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic began airing. The new show was a huge hit, not only with its target demographic of young girls, but by the power of internet, it soon became insanely popular with an older generation of young men and women from their teens to their late twenties, and beyond. These older fans create torrents of their own work inspired by the show, daily. Including fan art, fan fiction, music, comics, animation, audio dramas, costumes, and much much more.
The show is host to a diverse range of cheerful, relatable characters with very human strengths and weakness. They have everyday problems, and anxieties about the future. It is these characters that have kept me coming back year after year, just to see what life will throw their way next. And hey it makes me laugh and smile, life is too short to not laugh smile every now and then.
